What copyediting entails:
- Basic style guide convention (Chicago Manual of Style, 16th Edition)
5 manuscript pages an hour, 250 words per manuscript page @ 30 dollars an hour.
This is merely an estimate, but in general, this rate assumes medium-level copyediting on a final draft. Once I quote a bid, fifty percent of the total is required upfront. The second half of the total is required before the final pass is started. We will discuss your needs and my conditions and enter a final rate of total hours at 30 dollars an hour before we enter into a contract and I begin to work. Information about refunds, guarantees and other common questions related to services offered can be found on the F.A.Q.
I do a two-pass system for copyediting. The first pass is done in Word, in Review mode with Markup. Once I have completed this stage, I return the manuscript to you. You then approve or disapprove all edits and return the manuscript to me. I do the final edit on a printed copy and make changes in Word, using Review mode with Markup. The manuscript is returned to you, along with a scan of the printed copy with markup notations and notes, if desired.
For copyediting, I am proofing for technical edits. However, for all works I edit, I do provide a summary of my impressions, both as a reader and as an editor when it comes to structure, narrative elements, and other related issues. I am unable to address the editorial concerns individually without an agreement for a more comprehensive editing package (line editing or embracive editing).
